Overview
Across a portfolio of large coordination projects, a lot of BIM work is repeatable: converting models, running clash tests, exporting weekly deliverables, checking quality against standards. Without a shared reference and shared tooling, each person reinvents these steps and results drift.
I helped build and maintain a centralised BIM knowledge hub and a matching automation toolkit so the team could work from one consistent playbook — and so the mechanical parts of the weekly cycle ran themselves.
What it covered
- Standard workflows — Documented, repeatable procedures for clash detection, model federation, weekly/monthly exports, and file hand-offs, so every project ran the same way.
- BIM standards — Shared conventions for family naming and parameter usage, keeping models consistent and their data reliably extractable.
- Resource library — A central place for add-ons, packages, and reusable Dynamo/Python scripts, so tooling was shared rather than siloed.
- Team & roles — A clear map of who owned what across the coordination workflow.
Automation
The repetitive weekly cycle was streamlined with Dynamo and Power Automate:
- Batch conversion of authoring models into review formats.
- Assembling federated review files from a maintained source list.
- Running clash tests and producing the weekly review documents.
- Uploading and archiving deliverables to the common data environment.
Automating this cycle reduced manual, error-prone steps and freed coordination time for higher-value review work.
Impact
- A single source of truth for how the team coordinates, instead of tribal knowledge.
- Consistent models and deliverables across projects and people.
- Less time lost to repetitive conversion, export, and archiving tasks.
Scope
Internal BIM coordination infrastructure supporting multiple large projects.
Focus
- Workflow standardisation
- BIM naming & parameter standards
- Shared script/tool library
- Weekly-cycle automation
